The CPHR designation, pronounced C-P-H-R (each letter is said individually), represents a commitment to a national standard of excellence and sets a benchmark for the practice of effective Human Resources. It emphasizes the strategic role of HR management in business and plays an important role in securing HR's position as an equal business partner at the senior management table.
The CPHR designation signifies that an individual has achieved and continues to actively demonstrate mastery of the HR body of knowledge. Through a national examination and assessment process, each CPHR designate must demonstrate the core competencies relevant to the HR profession. Certification is an essential tool for maintaining high performance standards. The designation assures employers, clients and other HR professionals that a CPHR has committed to abiding by a professional code of ethics, a breach of which will result in disciplinary action including the possible removal of the designation.
CPHRs are required to report a minimum of 100 hours of professional development activity every three years on a cumulative basis and a minimum of 20 hours each year. Continuing Professional Development (CPD) signifies continued mastery of the CPHR Competency Framework, which outlines 44 discipline specific professional competencies.
The CPHR designation can enhance your career opportunities and compensation potential. An increasing number of organizations require or prefer that successful candidates for HR positions hold, or are working towards obtaining, the CPHR designation. This is particularly true for senior HR positions.
The CPHR designation is recognized throughout Canada and can be transferred between all provinces and territories.

Steps to Become a CPHR
Upon successful completion of all requirements for one of the routes above, a CPHR Certificate will be issued.
Please note that you do not need to follow these steps in order. However, one will not be considering as a CPHR Candidate until the NKE exam is passed or an NKE waiver has been approved.

Post-Secondary Institution (PSI) Accreditation Program
Graduates of Accredited Post-Secondary programs will be one step closer to receiving their CPHR designation and may be eligible to waive writing the NKE. Application for an NKE waiver must be made within one year of graduating from an Accredited HR Program. At this time, previous graduates of an Accredited HR Program may also be eligible to apply for an NKE waiver depending on program eligibility.

In order to write the National Knowledge Exam (NKE) one must be a current member of CPHR Manitoba. In order to become a CPHR in Manitoba one must maintain membership with CPHR Manitoba. Failure to renew your membership on a yearly basis will result in revocation of your CPHR designation (or CPHR Candidacy).
National Knowledge Exam (NKE)
The National Knowledge Exam® (NKE) is an academic exam that assesses one’s understanding of the Competency Framework.
The NKE is offered twice per year, on the first Saturday in June and November.
You are not required to complete your full required length of experience prior to writing the exam. We encourage you to register for and write the NKE as soon as possible following graduation. After successfully passing the NKE, one is considered to be a CPHR Candidate and is required to complete the VPE within ten (10) years. Being recognized as a CPHR Candidate while you are completing your experience requirement will provide you with additional recognition.

Validation of Professional Experience (VPE)
The Validation of Professional Experience (VPE) requires candidates to demonstrate three or more years of professional experience in human resources within the last ten (10) years. (the length of experience required depends on the route taken - see above)
The VPE requires Candidates to demonstrate experience at the professional level, which means that you must be using technical HR knowledge and have a level of autonomy in the application of your HR knowledge. Duties that are purely administrative requiring no HR knowledge are not considered.
Your experience must cover breadth in at least two of the nine functional dimensions of the CPHR Competency Framework or demonstrate complete proficiency in one functional dimension.

Recognition as a CPHR Candidate
Members who have passed the National Knowledge Exam and have not yet completed the Validation of Professional Experience (VPE) will be granted the ability to use “CPHR Candidate” as a professional title.
The CPHR is valued by the employment community and the ability to be officially recognized as a CPHR Candidate will provide you with additional recognition. You may use this title in resumes, business cards, emails, Linked-In or any other public profiles.
Code of Ethics
CPHR Manitoba's Code of Ethics identifies and outlines the standards of behaviour relating to fairness, justice, truthfulness, and social responsibility. All CPHR Candidates and CPHRs in Canada must abide by the code.
